Bridge to Nowhere hike
June 18, 2006 - Father's Day

Heading north out of the Los Angeles basin we were headed towards the East fork of San Gabriel River for a day hike.
This was a father's day gift from our wives, a whole day in the wilderness!

Passing San Gabriel Dam

The river coming from the mountains.
View from the trail head.

River crossing #2...

River crossing #3...

Many of these butterflies danced along the water

Lots of lizards too. Some of them more then a foot long.

A snake taking a bath...

...and warming up in the sun afterwards.

Huge Agaves lined the path.
From looking at hundreds of them it seems like the plant always dies after producing the enormous flower stalk, some of them were 12-15 ft high.
Can someone confirm this theory? Please send an email!

This is what has given the hike its name: Five miles from the trailhead there is an abandoned bridge over the river, seemingly leading nowhere.

The bridge was built in 1936 and dead ends into the mountain side. Rounding the mountain on the footpath to the right we found the entrance of a tunnel that was never finished.

No, I'm not going down there, I've done it once and that was enough!

Going back downstream we sometimes walked on what used to be the road leading to the bridge. Most of the road was swept away by floods in 1938 and has never been rebuilt.

Swan Rock

Time to cool of in the stream.

A perfect day hike. Thanks Jesper!!
